Arts in the 'Burg

Date published: 7/8/2007

THE ARTS community in the Fredericksburg region has a long and stellar list of contributors--the wonderful works of local potters and painters, sculptors and metalworkers can be found in galleries, restaurants, and homes throughout the area. Indeed, the results of a love of beauty and inspiration from the Muse can be found in unusual spots as well--on downtown mural walls, for instance, or in the wonderful and varied sculptures of dogs and cats done for 2005's Pawsitively Fredericksburg, or the current exciting and fun fish sculptures for Fintastically Fredericksburg, which wanderers can spot without warning across the town.

Perhaps it's not so surprising, then, that a delightful piece of artistic inspiration can be found on the back of a warehouse wall in our region. Roxbury Farm and Garden Center is the proud location of the MOREart! mosaic mural, intended for one purpose: to promote diversity. The piece features the tiled phrases "Nurture Diversity" and "Cultivate Harmony" overlooking a sublime vista of flora and indsects. The unveiling of the mural took place on Friday night. It is the work of Fredericksburg school students ranging in age from 11 to 18, as well as members of the Multicultural OutReach Effort. And the border of the mosaic includes a string of personal items embedded in the wall, relevant to the greater theme, contributed by private citizens who wanted to help an important mission.

The arts speak the language of the heart, too often neglected in the bustle and hurry of day-to-day life. A thing of beauty brings great joy--so kudos to our kids, and our town, for keeping artistic vision alive and well.
