Man stopped twice with suspended license

Man caught driving on suspended license twice in same night

Date published: 7/21/2007

BY KEITH EPPS

A young Stafford man was jailed Thursday after deputies caught him driving on a suspended license twice in the same night, police said.

According to sheriff's spokesman Bill Kennedy, Deputy Alan Hatmaker was on patrol about 1:15 a.m. when he received word to be on the lookout for a 1990 Jeep Wrangler.

The vehicle had been stopped a short time earlier by 1st Sgt. John McAlister and the driver had been given a summons for driving on a suspended license, Kennedy said.

Hatmaker spotted the vehicle on Warrenton Road heading toward U.S. 1 and stopped it at a Shell station on U.S. 1. The man McAlister had ticketed earlier was driving again.

Kennedy said that when the driver realized that he was being arrested, he argued that he had been "set up."

He claimed the other deputy gave him the impression that he could drive his vehicle home.

However, Kennedy said, McAlister said he did not tell the man he could continue to drive.

As the driver was being arrested, Kennedy said, he shouted that Hatmaker was violating his constitutional rights and called to customers at the gas station to help him.

Police said he finally calmed down after being warned that he'd face more charges if he didn't.

Jacob C. McGinnis, 22, was charged with driving suspended, second offense, and obstruction of justice. He was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.

DMV Just Another Tax Collector For The King (posted by ATM_Doctor , Sep. 25, 2007 2:41 pm)
My wife's SUV threw a rod, so we called and cancelled the insurance since we were going to junk it. Little did we know !! DMV found out and hit us up with a $600 uninsured motorist fee because we did not turn in the tags before we cancelled the policy. Geico NEVER told us about this. Also, after being pulled over, DMV will send out an "Insurance Monitoring" letter asking you to verify within two weeks your insurance. If you are on vacation and miss the letter, TOO BAD. Suspended license and BIG FINE!

Automatic Lockup! (posted by jayem , Sep. 25, 2007 2:41 pm)
The Virginia law should be changed. For example, The District of Columbia (DC) law requires everyone operating a vehicle to have a valid permit. Operating a vehicle in DC without having a valid permit is subjected to an automatic lockup. There are no second chances given such as letting a person drive home. They will be removed from their vehicle (that is impounded) and a tow truck will remove the vehicle. It's a very simple process.
