Two teens were arrested Thursday after a rock thrown from the side of the interstate struck the minivan of a pregnant woman and her husband.
Sgt. F.L. Tyler of Virginia State Police said the van was traveling in the southbound lane at mile marker 118--the Thornburg exit--on Interstate 95 about 4:30 p.m. when a rock hit their windshield, shattering it and spraying them with glass.
The 32-year-old female driver pulled over to the side of the road and her 36-year-old husband got out and saw two young males running from the scene, Tyler said.
He said another witness said he saw the teens throw the rock at the 1998 Nissan Quest the couple was driving.
Trooper R.D. Ward investigated the area and found two boys, ages 15 and 16 hiding by a building.
They were arrested and charged with felony throwing a missile at an occupied vehicle, obstruction of justice, felonious assault, attempted assault and felony conspiracy, Tyler said.
He said the passengers were not severely injured.
In 2003, a 70-pound boulder was dropped from a Spotsylvania County overpass that smashed through the roof of a car and critically injured a New York woman.
The woman was in a coma for two weeks and on a respirator for more than a month. She eventually recovered, but the case was never solved.

A lot of reasons why kids do such mean things. Not excusing the wrong, but thinking of what might drive the kids to crime. It's the dog days of summer and they have a lot of time on their hands. They may not have access to more productive things to do. They might be angry at what they perceive as limited opportunities. We don't know about the parents -- don't condemn the parents just yet. At this age the peer groups can have such a strong influence over parental influence. Very sad all around.

Parents are just too "BUSY" to raise their children these days. Or lazy, take your pick. It's much easier to just give the kids everything, and anything they want to shut them up and keep them out of their hair. There are more and more stories about kids committing these types of crimes in the news. Why?

I guess I just don't understand how this type of behavior makes one funny or cool. The fact that it was a moving vehicle makes it akin to attempted murder. Lock the little bastards up with the real criminals for a few months and see how cool and funny they are.
