Germanna to award credits to those who complete MediCorp's radiologic technology program
Date published: 9/8/2007
A new program for those aspiring to be radiologic technicians and get an associate degree is available at Germanna Community College.
The program is the result of a partnership between the college and MediCorp Health System's School of Radiologic Technology.
Germanna will award 15 college credits to students who finish MediCorp's program and become registered radiologic technologists, also known as radiographers.
These credits can then be transferred to Germanna, said Jane Ingalls, head of Germanna's nursing department. Students can take the necessary general education requirements and receive an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree in general studies with a specialization in radiologic technology, Ingalls said.
Graduates also will be able to transfer to a program in radiography at Virginia Commonwealth University.
MediCorp's fall class began Sept. 4 and has 21 stu- dents. Students go through six semesters of academic and clinical training, said Donna Carroll Van Norman, the MediCorp school's director.
During the first year, students attend class three days a week and practice their clinical skills the other two days. In the second year, the emphasis switches, with more time given to clinical practice.
"It's not simulation," Van Norman said. "They actually work with real patients."
