Fredericksburg resident Joshua Grigg helps save man at traffic light

Date published: 10/5/2007

By LAUREN BOSTON

Joshua Grigg was at the right place at the right time.

Sitting at a stoplight Sept. 15 on State Route 3, the 31-year-old Fredericksburg resident decided to get out and see why the car in front of him wasn't moving after the light turned green.

Looking through the driver's-side window, Grigg realized the car wasn't the problem.

The elderly driver was unconscious, and in serious danger.

"His door was locked and I couldn't really tell what was wrong, so I went around and managed to reach my hand through the passenger's-side window and unlock the door," Grigg said. "A police officer came up and probably thought I was some maniac trying to mug the guy, but I said, 'Sir, I have a little bit of training. This guy is dead. I checked his vitals, he has dilated pupils, and he's turning blue.'"

With permission from the police officer, Grigg said he pulled the man, identified as 75-year-old James Mead, out of the car and dragged him over to the median strip by Carlos O'Kelly's.

The former licensed practical nurse was about to give Mead mouth-to-mouth when he saw Mead's dentures, several of which had broken off and fallen to the back of his mouth.

"I had to put my hand down in his mouth and that was really scary because there was a point when the dentures were about to slide down his throat," Grigg said. "I gave him mouth to mouth and then another man who had shown up, a volunteer fireman, helped out a great deal." said the contractor.

The volunteer firefighter took over chest compressions for Grigg, who said he was a little leery since he had not taken a CPR class in a while.

By the time the ambulance arrived 20 to 25 minutes later, Mead appeared to be dead and paramedics were told to stop shocking him.

It was at that moment Grigg's faith took over.

"This gentleman was dead," he said, adding that he eventually stopped breathing. "I prayed for the gentleman and after I prayed I noticed some of the ER technicians were able to help him breathe on his own," he said. "I think the Lord has a lot to do with things like this."

If Mr. Mead had died, would you have credited god as well? (posted by pinkphantom , Oct. 12, 2007 8:03 am)
I'm very thankful that Mr. Mead survived his ordeal. However, people saved him, not prayer. It also was not god creating the circumstances. Get real, people! People are responsible for helping others and solving problems!!!!

Rest of the story... (posted by kitbonner , Oct. 11, 2007 2:34 pm)
The Star need to check it's facts -- while Mr. Grigg might have been the first on the scene, Mr. Timothy Martin (the "volutneer fireman") was the one that did all the work. There was an interview on ABC News at 7pm on 10/05. Thank you, Tim!

We can all pray... (posted by aprilfelicity , Oct. 6, 2007 10:12 pm)
I am so proud of my brother Joshua. As a registered nurse I know just how stressful an emergency situation can be. I can only imagine performing CPR in the middle of a busy intersection, not knowing how long it will be until help arrives. Prayer certainly was in order! Even when CPR is performed immediately, resuscitation of victims in the field is often unsuccessful. This story shows the power of faith in the midst of crisis. We should take this to heart and pray no matter how great the need. God answers!

Faith in action (posted by Fredtastic , Oct. 5, 2007 11:16 am)
Mr. Grigg showed faith in action. The Lord had prepared him for that day with his background and training in CPR. God doesn't HAVE to use CPR to revive someone, but he used it in this situation and saved a man's life. For that we should all be thankful, not skeptical.
