As an immigrant who used to prepare immigration applications, I wish to respond to The Free Lance-Star article titled "Stafford task force holds first meeting," Oct. 15].

The impact of mass [illegal] immigration is more than fiscal:

On July 2006, Mexican-American professor Armando Navarro, who has organized many rallies to fight all measures to secure our borders, was quoted in the Los Angeles Times as saying, "A new majority is forming. Everything will change. The White House will be within our reach."

According to the 2000 Census, the U.S. population had increased by about 13 percent since 1990, but those who identified themselves as Mexican had grown by 53 percent.

Although many Mexican-Americans are patriotic, during last year's massive demonstrations, many protesters waved Mexican flags and pressured the U.S. with demands identical to Mexico's.

Mexico has fought all U.S. measures to secure our borders and has actively encouraged illegal migration to the U.S.

In 1997, Ernest Zedillo, then-president of Mexico, declared in Chicago: "I have proudly affirmed that the Mexican nation extends beyond the territory enclosed by its borders and that Mexican migrants are an important--a very important--part of it." What is Mexico's real agenda?

Just one final word please (posted by patrick4hp , Oct. 25, 2007 10:31 pm)
God, I love blogging, it's so much fun!!! Look, it doesn't matter if it only effects a few latino votes, or a few social justice votes, or a few people fed up with Bush and want a change. Kerry lost OH by .05 percent, and he would have deafeated Bush. Latinos played a big role in getting him elected, and will play a big role in democats getting elected in the tight world of politics we have now. I would rather not treat my opponents as enemies though, bad for the soul. Take care guys.

In ten years i bet there wont be many latinos in this country.there will be no work for them and the american public will have had enough by then.

Racism ??? (posted by slarrivee , Oct. 25, 2007 7:16 pm)
Hey when I think of illegal immigrants I don't think solely of Mexicans...There are many illegal immigrants here from countries other than Mexico...Many Europeans and Asians and Middle Easterners...Many who wish to do harm to this country who will benefit from this Amnesty which is what it is...Who are also benefiting from our not securing our borders..Amnesty is not an answer to our immigration problem...Enforcing the laws we have in place and securing the borders is...

Most Citizens Are Fed Up (posted by LibBuster , Oct. 25, 2007 6:58 pm)
If you think it is just coservatives who are fed up with illegal immigration, you are wrong. Many American-loving Democrats are ticked as well, as this issue cuts across both party lines. In any event, you overestimate the Latino vcte, and besides in 20 years there simply will be no money left for both Latino Welfare (nearly 50% of Latinos drop out of high school) and Medicare and Social Security. That does not portend a prosperous and secure future.

Voting (posted by GaryShorts , Oct. 25, 2007 6:22 pm)
Actually by law you have to be a U.S. citizen (natural or immigrant) to vote in state elections. And you do not have to have a driver's license to vote. Ask about it when you to the polls on Nov 6.

What do you think?
