A Board of Supervisors candidate in King George County has been ousted by his own political party as a local Republican chairman and committee member.
The county GOP Committee voted Tuesday to remove John Headley, who is campaigning as a Republican for the James Madison District seat against independent incumbent Joseph Grzeika.
Larry Kile, the committee's new chairman, said earlier this month that Headley had been asked to step down, but refused. Resolutions from regional party affiliates accuse Headley of "abusive behavior" toward other party members and say he "created a negative image" of the party.
"With this matter resolved, we as a committee look forward to focusing our attention on the coming elections and serving the community of King George," Kile said in a written statement.
"There are many significant issues facing our community, and the Republican Party has many strong candidates who are well capable of meeting these needs. We are eager to offer them our full support and attention."
Headley also issued a written statement, insisting that the King George committee did not follow proper procedures to remove him. In that statement, he referred to himself as chairman 14 times.
"Therefore, after due consideration and with great sadness, Chairman Headley has recently ruled Mr. Kile and several other inactive committee members dilatory and are no longer recognized as active King George Republican Committee members," Headley said in the statement.
Shaun Kenney, communications director for the Republican Party of Virginia, said the state's GOP leadership will look to the party's 1st District committee for recognized chairmen and members.
Tom Foley, the acting director of the district committee, said he will recognize Kile as King George's Republican chairman.
"Nobody took the step lightly without talking to him multiple times. People are upset by it, [there's] not a lot to say about it," Foley said.
"I'm pained by the whole thing, just about everybody is. I know everyone means him well."
This year is believed to be the first for King George board elections to feature openly partisan candidates.
Lance Bacon, who is also running as a Republican, is seeking the Dahlgren District seat. The three remaining candidates are all running as independents.

I am so glad to be rid of "Mr. Headley", I can't write what he is called in our family in the paper. He is the most irritating, arrogant man I have ever met. He passes out his literature at every game and school function. He won't take a "No thank you" from anyone he keeps pushing his flyers no matter what you say while most of us are trying to watch our kids perform. Doesn't he know someone has to go around cleaning up his litter after all the people he pushed it on threw it down? Good Job Board,
