Girl Scout Troop 753 has placed this recycling box for ink and laser cartridges at the Stafford landfill.

Troop 170

Boy Scouts from Troop 170 picked up donations for Scouting for Food on Nov. 10. Troop 170 is sponsored by the Fredericksburg United Methodist Church Men's Group. The food goes to the church's food pantry, which is open five days per week.

Last year, the troop collected 3,000 pounds of food.

This year, the boys topped that total by collecting 3,717 pounds of food.

Venture Crew 1221

Venturers have had a varied and busy fall.

Recent activities have included a SCUBA training weekend in Rawlings; biking the C&O Canal; and hiking in Shenandoah National Park--almost a high adventure triathlon.

The SCUBA training weekend allowed Janis Singley and Edouard Guilloux to work on their PADI advanced open water certification. Nate Izquierdo and John Engiles completed their PADI rescue diver.

John also finished two specialty certifications in peak performance buoyancy and underwater navigation. Alyssa Engiles completed her training to increase her Instructor rating to PADI master SCUBA diver trainer under the direction of Bob Tallent.

Nine Venturers and adult leaders started biking the C&O Canal from Cumberland, Md., toward Washington. While they did not complete the entire 184 miles, they completed two-thirds, riding 110 miles while camping at Paw Paw, W.Va., and Fort Frederick, Md. The peloton observed deer, turkey, snakes and other critters as they rode this historic trail.

Edouard Guilloux, Paul Guilloux, Nick George, Stephen Ferry, Janis Singley and John Engiles completed the trek.

Nick Newsom and Kyle Olson conquered an 11-mile superstrenuous trail with an elevation gain of more than 3,000 feet in the Shenandoah National Park while participating in the V3 Hike-O-Ree.

The crew now turns equestrian and has scheduled horseback riding trip for early December. As winter approaches a ski/snow-boarding weekend is being planned as well. Any 14- to 20-year-old boy or girl is welcome to join the fun and adventure. For details, contact Dario Izquierdo at izquierdo3@comcast.net or 540/226-6051.

Girl SCout Troop 753

There is a new Girl Scout Green Recycling box at the Stafford landfill. Standing next to the Stafford County Sheriff's cell phone recycling box is Girl Scout Troop 753 Ink and Laser cartridge collection box.

Most people either throw out their ink and laser cartridges or return them in the manufacturers shipping packages. By putting them in the Girl Scout recycling box, Troop 753 can raise money for their community service projects and to fund troop events.

Cartridges the Troop associated recyclers won't take are turned over to the troop sponsor, the 6-3 Networking Group in Stafford. The 6-3 Networking Group uses other recyclers and have helped raise money for D.A.R.E., Families of the Wounded, SERVE and more.
