USING NATURE'S GIFTS WORTH TRYING: Seeing a youngster at the farmers market last week with hands stained from husking black walnuts reminded me of how we did it in my youth. The driveway into the house had depressions, mudholes if you will, into which we dumped unhulled walnuts. Driving over them took care of the hulls without cracking the walnuts, which could then be removed and dried.

WORTH TRYING: Now is a perfect time to prepare planting beds for spring. Clear them of weeds, especially perennials such as dandelions, cover with leaves and either spade or till them in before again covering the area with leaves. Remove excess leaves next spring and plant, or plant through the leaves. No further tilling is needed.
