UDC HONORS 'REAL DAUGHTER'
Brooke Hughes Snead's grave receives marker
Date published: 12/1/2007

THE LATE Brooke Hughes Snead of Fredericksburg, a "Real Daughter" of a Civil War veteran, was honored by the Fredericksburg Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in a special ceremony recently at her grave site in Scottsburg near Danville and Halifax.

A UDC Real Daughter marker for Snead was dedicated by Fredericksburg chapter president Jill Simmons. Many of Snead's family members attended and two of the youngest family members unveiled the marker.

Snead was the daughter of Eldridge Tucker Hughes, a Confederate soldier who served in the 4th Virginia Calvary, Company F, "The Goochland Light Dragoons." He died at the age of 89 in 1936 and was buried in Fluvanna County in his uniform with the Southern Cross of Honor pinned to his jacket. He still carried shrapnel in his leg from a war wound.

Snead, who joined the UDC in 1956, was active with the Fredericksburg chapter up until her death in July 2005 at the age of 98. She was an educator for 44 years and a longtime member of St. George's Epi- scopal Church in Fredericksburg. She is buried next to her husband of 57 years, Raymond Snead, at Oakland Cemetery in Scottsburg.

The ceremony included the posting of the colors by the Capt. William L. Day Camp, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Color Guard of Orange County. Fredericksburg UDC chapter chaplain Beverly Williams gave the invocation and flowers were presented by the Fredericksburg and Halifax chapters of the UDC.
