Hot car club gives to holiday needy

If you've ever driven down Fall Hill Avenue on a Friday summer evening, you've probably noticed that the Virginia BBQ parking lot is crammed with some seriously hot horsepower.

If automotive engineering gets you revved up, there isn't a gym in town that can compete with the popped and polished muscle on display.

Those mean machines belong to members of the Fredericksburg Classic and Muscle Car Club. The Mustangs, Novas and Chevy pickups are doing more than just reflecting the rays of the evening sun--they are raising money to help local families have a better holiday.

Founded in 1995, the club has always been geared toward charity. Throughout the year, the club collects dues and registration fees at car shows. This year, the approximately 50 club members raised more than $2,000 for five needy families and a shoe fund.

Club President Sue Wilson (owner of a 1968 Volkswagen Baja Bug) is dedicated to helping area families, and says that the club will expand its charitable event calendar next year.

"There are so many clubs that don't benefit the community," she said. "We really do benefit the community. That's why we're here. We've got members that really want to do it--it's fun for us."
