Area activities honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. starting today

Date published: 1/20/2008

Tomorrow is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and at least one local group is getting an early start on honoring the civil-rights leader.

From 3 to 5 p.m. today, the Multicultural OutReach Effort of Fredericksburg is sponsoring music, dancing and other free activities at James Monroe High School on Washington Avenue.

More area organizations are hosting events tomorrow. They include:

The King George Masonic Lodge on U.S. 301 in King George County will host a celebration breakfast starting at 9 a.m. The Rev. Frederick Carter of Shepherdsville Baptist Church will speak; music will be by recording artist Cora Armstrong. Tickets are $15.

Colonial Beach Concerned Citizens will hold a celebration at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church on Jackson Street. Linda Thomas, past president of the Virginia NAACP chapter, will speak. The event is free, but donations will benefit the Colonial Beach Community and Family Center.

The University of Mary Washington will kick off a week of activities with a civil-rights tribute speech at 11:50 a.m. in front of Trinkle Hall. A Unity March starts at 3 p.m. at the Jepson Science Center. A King impersonator will be featured at 4 p.m. at Dodd Auditorium in George Washington Hall.
