'Friend' charged with rape of child

Stafford man charged with raping friend's 10-year-old daughter

Date published: 2/16/2008

BY KEITH EPPS

A Stafford County man has been charged with raping the 10-year-old daughter of some family friends.

Paul Gregory Chapman, 37, was arraigned yesterday in Stafford Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court on charges of rape and taking indecent liberties with a child.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 10. Chapman is being held without bond in the Rappahannock Regional Jail.

According to an affidavit for a search warrant filed in Stafford Circuit Court, the incident occurred during the summer at Chapman's home at 10 Greenridge Drive in Stafford.

Police became involved after the girl reported the attack to a counselor at Brock Road Elementary School in Spotsylvania County Feb. 8.

According to the affidavit, the girl told the counselor and later Detective Don Lenhart that "Paul" was a friend of her mother and stepfather. She went to his home with her family over the summer and swam in Chapman's swimming pool.

The girl told the counselor that she and her brother spent the night at the home so they could swim again the next day.

During the night, according to the affidavit, the girl was sleeping on the living-room couch when "Paul" lifted her off the couch and took her to his bedroom.

He laid her on the bed and took her night clothes off. The girl said she pretended to be asleep because she was afraid that "Paul" was going to hurt her.

The girl told police that Chapman posed her in different positions and took pictures of her, including close-ups of her private area. He then took his own clothes off and got into the bed with the girl and molested her, the affidavit says.

The girl said after Chapman rolled over and went to sleep, she eventually went into the bathroom, put her clothes back on and returned to the couch.

The victim's mother told authorities Chapman's full name and address and said the child spent the night at his home sometime in August. The mother told police that she and her husband had been friends with Chapman for years and had visited his home a few weeks earlier.

I know this man. He's been a friend for a very long time. I'm shocked. I'm sickened. I never would have pictured Paul as a child molester. He has 3 kids of his own, 2 boys,1 girl. I will never understand what could possibly bring a person to harm a child. He's a father, he knows right from wrong. I don't care if it's a disease. I DON'T CARE! How would Paul feel if someone had done this to his child??? I'M SICK OVER THIS!

this little girl has gone through hell, and should be praised for having the bravery to come forward so soon after the event. Like others have said too often they keep it bottled up and don't talk about it till they are well into adulthood. i have a 6 year old daughter and if ANYTHING were to happen to her like that i would hope she would have the strength this little girl did. i knew paul growing up and i would have never suspected this behavior, so it just goes to show. its where you least expect it.

How can someone do that type of thing to a child. I am so glad that this little girl spoke up. If she did not speak up then this matter may be still going on. I hope that Chapman gets the highest jail term evern life for the pain that he has caused this little girl..

2237.... Good thing she told someone. It takes time (posted by lifeisbeautiful , Feb. 16, 2008 8:32 pm)
for some kids to get the courage to speak up. I'm glad she did & hope there aren't anymore victims. I hope the parents don't blame themselves because it was only one person's (alleged) fault. If the story is true may he spend the rest of his days in jail preferably with his head detached. I hope not to see an "all but 6 months suspended..." deal. Letting him live should be the only "deal" he gets. Pat, made some good points. Prayers to the family.

What a freak (posted by fugyou , Feb. 16, 2008 6:21 pm)
The poor kid. Justice won't ever be served in this case, unless the man is wiped off the earth. Doubtful that'll happen 'round here.
