A former Fredericksburg Christian Schools computer science teacher was charged this week with aggravated sexual battery.

Sgt. F.L. Tyler of the state police said his office received a tip in January about a sexual assault. After an investigation, a Spotsylvania County grand jury returned indictments.

He said special agent Jane Gibbs of the state police conducted the investigation that resulted in Thomas Garvin Best of Fredericksburg, being charged with six counts of aggravated sexual battery and one count of taking indecent liberties with a minor.

Tyler said the assaults happened between 2001 and 2007 and Best was indicted with one charge of sexual battery for each year.

Tyler would not say whether the victim was a former student, but did say she was a juvenile in 2001, which resulted in the indecent liberties charge. He said the victim was an adult for the subsequent years.

Best's age and additional information about the incidents were not available.

Best was served with the indictments Feb. 21 and released on a $10,000 bond, Tyler said. He is scheduled to be arraigned March 14.
