Four teens guilty in vandalism case

Teenage vandals sentenced for racial slurs

Date published: 2/23/2008

BY ELLEN BILTZ

Four teenage boys have been convicted of felony vandalism for scrawling racial slurs and destroying walls at a Spotsylvania County home under construction.

Last April, Bridgette Williams came to visit the new house she would soon move in to.

But she was shocked to find a picture of a black man hanging by a rope and the words "Slave 4 Sale. Buy 1 get 1 free."

The vandals, three 15-year-olds and one 14-year-old, were all convicted in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, said Commonwealth's Attorney Bill Neely.

Yesterday, the final teen was sentenced to the same thing as his fellow vandals, supervised probation.

A $5,000 restitution was also ordered to the construction company, Top Notch Builders, he said.

Williams, a black woman, was upset yesterday, saying the racial slurs written on her home were demeaning and the boys should face a more severe punishment.

"You violated me and you violated my family," she said.

Williams said the actual damage to the home was much greater than $5,000 and she would be considering a civil lawsuit.

She expressed disappointment and said there was too much lax in the legal system.

"Look at the message they sent out to the community with these kids," she said about the county's judicial system. "They're saying you could burn a cross in a black person's yard and it would be no big deal."

do we all understand what a felony is? Jobs always in question, no voting rights, try to provide for their futere families. Thos without fault throw th first stone. Iam not saying what these boys did is right! We need to come along side are youth with the examples we set. Why perpetuate HATE wit HATE?

probation? (posted by citygirl123 , Feb. 25, 2008 10:32 am)
that is pathetic. these kids should atleast be in juvenile detention at least. what a joke. this just tells kids they can do whatever they want with no consequences.

That would be satisfactory punishment (posted by blowinsmoke , Feb. 24, 2008 9:03 am)
considering the worse thing they have probably ever recieved was "time outs". The government has taken away the ability for parents to correct and keep their kids in check, and kids know this. So, to bring the parents in to the mix for punishment isn't right. On the other hand, if a parent is negligent in storing their firearms and a teen takes a kills someone with it....differnt story, they should be held accountable.

Smoke - it certainly is the parent's fault (posted by lifeisbeautiful , Feb. 24, 2008 7:52 am)
shouldn't they have know where those kids were? Okay, calm down. I'm just kidding. The kids are at fault. The kids need to get a job & pay what is owed. They got off easy & I hope it's a wake up call. Maybe they should have to do some yard work for Ms Williams while wearing a sign that says, "I'm the moron who trashed this nice lady's house." Too harsh? Well I believe in PC-free posts. (PCFP)
