Jay Carelock earns Boy Scouts' highest honor, Eagle

Jay Carelock, a member of Boy Scout Troop 165, was awarded the Eagle Scout rank at a recent Eagle Court of Honor.

He was presented the rank by troop Scoutmaster Bruce White, who also is an Eagle Scout.

The troop, sponsored by Fredericksburg Knights of Columbus Council 4034, held the Court of Honor at the Presbyterian Church in Fredericksburg.

Carelock joined Scouting in March 2000 as a Basic Scout. He earned Tenderfoot in June 2000; Second Class in September 2000; and First Class in December 2000. Carelock advanced to Star Scout in June 2001 and earned Life rank in March 2002.

In addition to the 21 merit badges required for Eagle, Carelock earned the BSA snorkel as well as scuba certification. Carelock earned the Mile Swim badge in 2003 and 2004. He earned the Totin' Chip and Firem'n Chit badges. Carelock attended junior leader training in 2001.

He attended summer camp at Camp H.C. Bonner from 2000 through 2004. He participated in the Greenbrier Trail bike trip as well as the C&O Canal bike trip.

He held numerous leadership positions in the troop including librarian, troop guide, patrol leader, senior patrol leader and is junior assistant Scoutmaster.

Carelock earned the Arrow of Light while a Cub Scout.

Carelock planned, organized and developed a trail head for the Dahlgren Railroad Heritage Trail as his Eagle service project.

Carelock is a member of the Presbyterian Church in Fredericksburg, where he participated in the Montreat youth conference and the youth group mission trip from 2004 to 2007. He also participated with Habitat for Humanity from 2004 to 2007.

Carelock is a graduate of Massaponax High School, where he lettered as a member of the varsity swim team, soccer team and cross country team. He also was a member of the symphonic band and Key Club, and was a cast member of "A Midsummer Night's Dream."

Carelock, who is attending Christopher Newport University, is the son of Jim and Heather Carelock of Fredericksburg.
