Have our leaders learned nothing from the war in Vietnam?

Have our leaders learned nothing from the war in Vietnam?

As reported in The Free Lance-Star on March 24, the U.S. death toll in Iraq tops 4,000. Divided by the five-year total time of the war, it equals 800 per year.

That does not sound like a large number unless one of those individuals is your loved one.

The number of wounded, many severely, is reported as 60,000.

I am hopeful the next U.S. president will quickly bring our troops home and end a war that even the more optimistic supporters feel is only halfway to completion.

I am sorry to say that it appears our political leaders did not learn from our war in Vietnam. History, it appears, does tend to repeat itself.

what do you suggest, schhol prayer? Your point was... (posted by uncjohnny , Mar. 27, 2008 4:43 pm)
stupid. You are comparing everyday human failure to a War that was and is avoidable. Glad you did your 20+ years. I'm still doing mine and my father the same. Unfortunately, your service makes you no less the fool for saying what you said and then going further with spewing more stupid rhetoric without checking your facts. The shame is, you won't learn, you'll continue to spew that crap and believe that the two are the same. Iraq and crime have nothing in common. Crime is unavoidable...what do you suggest?

Because of your further stupid comments I'm going to provide a link for you. I'm provided the e-mail you speak of to snopes and the actual numbers taken from the report linked:http://www.snopes.com/politics/military/deaths.asp Now, I know it's hard to do your own research and it's easier to listen to the rhetoric, but now the facts are laid out for you, without bias. Yes, I served as well, and I work in along side these folks everyday still. I also work in the Pentagon. Your point was not missed...

Obviously you missed the point. We want to talk about all of the problems in Iraq, yet miss the basic problems in our own backyard. Naturally, you weren't here for 9/11. How many planes have slammed into a building in Iraq? Oklahoma City ring a bell? Virginia Tech? Northern Illinois? Columbine? We have had less die in this war than under Bill Clinton's regime. That's odd. Now, I have been to Iraq, have you? I have been to Bosnia, have you? I did my 20+ years of service for this country, have you?

...are dying in Iraq, but I'd feel safer if they were here protecting our homeland or abroad protect our US assets. Maybe looking for OBL. Good thing we've got them in Iraq, fighting goat hearders from Syria, Iran and other neighboring countries.

I was one of those volunteers and I'll tell you now, that very few sign up wanting to be shot out and none volunteer to die. I have the stomach to get the job done. What I don't have the stomach for is stupid people making stupid comments. We don't belong in Iraq, we should be fighting terror not insurgents. Just because some idiots are too stupid to see that Bush has pulled a "slight of hand" on them, doesn't mean the rest of us have no stomach for security. I'm glad those people feel safer because...
