A fire caused by the sawing of scrap metal ignited about an acre of woods between Overview Drive and Mills Drive in Spotsylvania County yesterday.
The fire near Cosner's Corner was called in to the Spotsylvania Fire Department just before 2:30 p.m. It was under control about a half-hour later, said Capt. Gary Campbell of the Fire Department.
Campbell said the flames, which were about 12 feet high at some points, reached a guard rail near one road, but no one was injured.
Traffic, however, was slow in the area while the fire was being battled. About 15 firefighters were on the scene.
Most of the trees were charred black from the flames, and an old boat and RV also were destroyed, though there was no damage to nearby structures.
