APPLAUSE FOR SPRING SHRUBS WORTH TRYING: These spring-flowering shrubs need little pruning, though removing dead flowers from rhododendrons, being careful not to harm the leaf buds developing beneath them, improves their appearance. Cutting to remove dead limbs and improve shape is a chance one takes. If you do prune, prune just after blooming--and with some plants not all at once, but over a few years.

STOP AND SMELL THE COFFEE SOMETHING'S PERKING: To brew a great cup of coffee, use fresh, cold water. Water from the tap or bottled spring water are fine, but never use distilled water. Only grind as many beans as you'll use to brew one pot, and make sure that pot and filter basket are really clean. Remove the coffee grounds immediately after brewing to prevent bitterness in the next batch you make.

BELMONT TRAIL FULFILLS WISH SEED OF AN IDEA: Corinne Melchers, in a Sept. 15, 1943, letter to Tom Colt, director of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond: "My initial thought, which I feel would be an excellent one to carry out when I am gone, is as follows: to create paths along the streams and through the glens, starting in Falmouth and finally leading one to the Warrenton Road a half mile distant. This would provide a much needed opportunity for a short promenade in the woods, which are very beautiful indeed. I very much count on the pleasure the public will derive from the Melchers Memorial as a park, as well as a shrine for Gari's pictures and a gallery for contemporary art." WANT TO GO?

'NO' TO NAUGHTY FIELD TRIPS THE CHICKEN RANCH: According to Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia, the Chicken Ranch Brothel was first established in Texas in 1844. It was so named because local farmers and ranchers were cash-poor and often bartered some of their chickens for the services rendered. The Nevada brothel was opened in 1976, and the location was chosen because it was the closest they could put it to Las Vegas and still be legal.

BULBS FOR SPRING BLOOM WORTH TRYING: It is easy to rescue a clump of spring starflowers or grape hyacinths. Mark it, and when the foliage has died down, lift the clump and remove weeds from the bulbs. Rake mulch away from the area where you want them to grow, disturb the ground and broadcast the cleaned bulbs over the prepared soil. Rake gently to sift soil over the bulbs, and replace the mulch.
