Wildcats' DMR team lands invite to Penn

Commonwealth notebook

Few track and field meets match the prestige of the Penn Relays.

More than 15,000 college and high school runners will converge on Philadelphia April 24-26 to participate in 300 races.

The experience alone will be enough to motivate Mountain View's track team, which for the first time will have several runners participating.

"It would be pretty neat to win, but just having a shot to compete up there is great," Mountain View coach Dave Davis said. "It's a completely different atmosphere."

The Distance Medley Relay at the Penn Relays is by invitation only. At last Saturday's VA Runner Invitational at Colonial Forge, the Wildcats ran a 10:26 in the event, good enough to secure a spot at Penn.

D.J. Haskins will run the 400, Myles David the 800, Chris Brown the 1,200 and Thomas Porter the 1,600 in the unique relay.

Mountain View will also try either the 3,200 or 400 relay--those events require qualifying times but are not by invitation.

Wildcats senior Olu Olamigoke--The Free Lance-Star's indoor track runner of the year--will also compete in the triple jump.

"It's a good statement with how these guys are training and what they've accomplished," Davis said. "That's a group that's been together for three years and they've really worked hard for it."

Sampson rehabbing, getting set for '09

Brooke Point's girls track and field team will be a factor at the Commonwealth District Championships next month.

Along with Colonial Forge, the Black-Hawks should compete for a title but first they'll have to make up the 20 or 30 points junior Becky Sampson would have scored.

Sampson injured her knee in the triple jump at the Northwest Region Indoor Track championships in February. She's already had surgery and is rehabbing for next season.

"Every meet we could count on her 20 or 30 points," Brooke Point coach Joe Ocheltree said. "But that's just part of athletics. You can't control it. We see it every day, particularly with someone that's an intense competitor like she is."

Sampson is still with the team, helping to work meets and training other hurdlers. She won the district's 100- and 300-meter hurdles titles last spring, and should be back with the team for the next indoor season.

"She's handled it very well," Ocheltree said. "Obviously, she's very disappointed. But she's super positive. She'll be back.

"Like I said--she's an intense competitor. This is just another competition--rehabbing her knee--that she's going to win."

Riverbend's Guizar to U.Va.-Wise

Riverbend senior Josh Guizar will play baseball next year at U.Va.-Wise.

Guizar was an honorable mention all-Battlefield District pick last year for the Bears, who advanced to the Region I semifinals in 2007.
