Shadows Fall plays to a nearly empty room at Jaxx

Despite their "Guitar Hero 2" fame, Shadows Fall did not draw a very large crowd to the show they headlined at Jaxx Nightclub in Springfield last Sunday.
This was nice for the fans who had been around since before the group's newfound fame--it was actually possible to get a front-row spot for the much-hailed band.
First up on the show list was Droid, a band that plays a somewhat typical blend of death- and thrash-metal. Although the group seems to have talent, they did not break much ground that has not been covered before. They fit the mold perfectly of a typical death metal band.
The Showdown came on next with their somewhat melodic and old-school brand of metal. Although they are not a very innovative group either, I found it easier to get into their music than Droid's.
The big names then took the stage, starting with Arsis. Many metal fans praise them highly for their progressive and technical take on extreme music. Although I find technical music tedious after a while, Arsis does it well and with a catchy and accessible style that makes listening enjoyable even for those who may not comprehend every musical move they are making.
Up to this point, every band had played a fairly short set, and Kataklysm did not change this at all, despite the fact that the band is somewhat legendary in the death-metal scene. The group played a good sampling of songs from their discography, including several off their 1990s-era albums and a new, unreleased song. Kataklysm's loud, aggressive, classic death-metal sound is still as relevant today as it was when they started, and everyone seemed to be really into their set.
Finally Shadows Fall took the stage, playing to one of the smallest audiences I have seen them entertain in a long time. The fans who were there seemed to be the real deal, however, singing along with all the words and playing air guitar to all the songs. The band played a lot of songs off their older albums, saying they intended to play music they hadn't performed live in a while.
All of the old material was amazing, but that did not make up for the fact that they followed along with the theme of the show in not playing for a long time at all. Their set was finished by about 11 p.m., and they did not do an encore.
All in all, though, I was glad I had braved the terrible weather to go see a band that has managed to become extremely well-known and still not sell out.

Should've went to the Shadows Fall show! Although never was a huge fan of death metal - more into the power/prog metal, though. However, I will be at the Ensiferum/Turisus/Tyr show coming up on Monday, and then next week - friggan SYMPHONY X!!!
