Medical Corps to hold Culpeper orientation
The Rappahannock-Rapidan Medical Reserve Corps will hold an orientation for new volunteers on Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Culpeper County Health Department at 640 Laurel St. in Culpeper.
Anyone interested in learning more about the Medical Reserve Corps or volunteering is asked to attend. A medical background is not necessary to volunteer, and many skills are needed.
Volunteers who have completed their orientation may participate in CPR/AED training Wednesday, May 14, from 6 to 9 p.m., and the radiation terror incidents training Wednesday, June 18, from 7 to 9 p.m.
The RRMRC volunteers will meet Thursday, May 22, to receive Epidemiology 301 training. This training will complete the series of three Epidemiology classes needed to become a member of the epidemiology response team.
The RRMRC leadership team will have a training meeting Saturday, June 14, from 9 a.m. until noon at the Culpeper Health Department. This is a group of RRMRC volunteers who have been chosen to hold leadership positions at medication dispensing sites in the event of an emergency.
Anyone from Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock interested in volunteering is invited to register for an orientation session by calling 540/829-7350, ext. 132 or by e-mail at

Federal grant to aid Neck bus services
Bay Transit will be receiving a grant of $618,661 from the U.S. Department of Transportation for the engineering, design, and construction of a new bus maintenance and administration building in Warsaw.
Rep. Rob Wittman, R-Montross, announced the grant yesterday.
Bay Transit is a division of Bay Aging and operates a public transportation bus system serving nine counties and three towns in the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck.
The facility will include a maintenance bay and a separate wash bay area.
"Virginians deserve a safe and reliable means of public transportation, especially in light of the outrageous gasoline prices we've recently experienced, " Wittman said. "This funding will help provide Bay Transit with the bus and administrative facilities they need to continue to serve our area.''
Fauquier students
Two Fauquier County high public school students captured first-place awards in the state in career and technical education competitions at the SkillsUSA 44th State Leadership Conference and Skills Championships last week in Hampton.
Liberty High School student Douglas Dunn won first place in the automotive-service technology competition and Fauquier High School student Matt Scandalis took first in technical drafting. The two will represent Virginia at the National SkillsUSA competition Jun. 22-28 in Kansas City.
They will compete with more than 4,500 CTE students--all state contest winners--in approximately 90 different hands-on trade, technical and leadership fields.
Five students from four of Fauquier High School's trade programs participated in the state SkillsUSA competition. In addition to the two first-place winners, Fauquier High student Michael Lewis placed third in architectural drafting, Liberty High student Jonathan Davis placed seventh in collision-repair refinishing, and Fauquier High's Mary Currier placed ninth in residential wiring.
