Rebuilding Together tackles projects

Date published: 5/6/2008

Rebuilding Together--Fredericksburg Affiliate, in cooperation with volunteers from Summit and Hartwood Presbyterian churches, helped SERVE to create a fresher, more professional office and food distribution facility.

SERVE is a nonprofit organization located across from Stafford County Courthouse. It offers food and financial assistance to low income families in the counties of Stafford, Spotsylvania, Caroline and King George as well as Fredericksburg.

Rebuilding Together--Fredericksburg is part of a national organization that focuses on repairing properties for low-income families, elderly, disabled, or nonprofit organizations as a means of giving back to the community. Rebuilding Together uses a variety of skilled and unskilled volunteers to do the work.

The work at SERVE was led by house captains Jeff Garrett from Summit Presbyterian and George Smith from Hartwood Presbyterian. Larry Nelson from Rebuilding Together--Fredericksburg was the site coordinator.

More than 50 men, women and youth participated in the multifaceted project, which included painting, installation of a partition, removal of carpeting, renovation of bathrooms and yard work.

The rebuilding process will continue on Saturdays until the work is completed. To get involved, either by volunteering or offering financial support, call 540/373-9807.

--Laurann Robertson, Summit Presbyterian Church
