Intro to this year's NIE Star Search competition

TODAY'S newspaper showcases talents of local middle- and high-school student winners in the 2008 Star Search creative media contest, a project of The Free Lance-Star's Newspapers in Education program.

We received 350 submissions total for the contest, which included categories in feature, editorial and personal-column writing, editorial and comic-strip cartooning, and ad design.

The 32 winning entries, selected jointly by teachers and representatives from the Free Lance-Star newsroom, appear in today's MyLine and in the Opinion section on page A9, as well as on our Web site at fredericksburg.com/nie.

Each winner will receive a plaque and a cash prize of $50.
