RICHMOND-- A Virginia Democratic superdelegate yesterday switched her support from Sen. Hillary Clinton to Sen. Barack Obama, saying it seems unlikely that Clinton can catch up with Obama for the presidential nomination.
Del. Jennifer McClellan, of Richmond, who committed to support Clinton months ago, said she will now back Obama after he won the North Carolina primary Tuesday night and came close to Clinton in Indiana.
Her decision was pushed by the math: McClellan said it is unlikely that Clinton can rack up enough delegates and superdelegates in the few remaining primaries to surpass Obama's delegate numbers.
"The time has come to support Senator Obama as our likely nominee," McClellan said in a conference call held with Gov. Tim Kaine, a longtime Obama supporter. "I think that given what happened (Tuesday) night it is very unlikely that we will have a different result, and it's time to come together as a party to support Senator Obama."
The Associated Press tally counts 1,846.5 delegates for Obama to Clinton's 1,696. It would take 2,025 delegates to win the nomination in the party's convention in Denver this summer.
McClellan is one of four superdelegates who committed to Obama yesterday; according to the Associated Press, two North Carolina superdelegates and a California one pledged to support Obama.
Kaine said he knew the decision to switch allegiance was hard for McClellan, who said she pledged her support for Clinton because she believed Clinton was the best candidate and was a "committed and effective public servant."
McClellan also noted that her House of Delegates district voted for Obama in Virginia's primary.
"I acknowledge this is a tough call for Jen to make, but it's ultimately the right call that all of us should be making for our party," Kaine said. "It is now time to unify behind the nominee."
Neither Kaine nor McClellan called on Clinton to quit the race, but Kaine said he expects more superdelegates to back Obama in the coming days, and he thinks it's time for the long nomination contest to be settled.
Virginia has 16 superdelegates total; with McClellan's switch, five back Obama, five still support Clinton and six remain uncommitted.

there is no honor among thieves after all. They don't have the decency to wait until the math tells them there is zero chance Clinton. I don't like either one of them, but I do believe in honor. I suppose Hil would do the same thing ...so
