Police search for suspects in Spotsy bank robbery

Date published: 5/9/2008

BY ELLEN BILTZ

Two men are being sought in the robbery yesterday of the PNC Bank on U.S. 1 near Southpoint in Spotsylvania County yesterday.

The men were last seen fleeing the bank on foot and running through the shopping center, where police later recovered a bundle of money they had dropped on the run.

Despite some success in tracking by sheriff's office and Virginia State Police K-9s, police were not able to find the men yesterday, said 1st Sgt. Liz Scott of the sheriff's office.

She said the robbers, described as black males, went into the bank about 10:49 a.m. One of the men handed the teller a deposit slip, then demanded all of the bank's cash. The second man then pushed the door open from the inside and the two fled the bank on foot.

Neither was seen with a weapon.

At about 12:20 p.m., the K-9s were taken out to search for the men, but were eventually unsuccessful Scott said.

She said the dogs were able to track a scent for a while, but it is believed that the robbers got into a vehicle at some point.

The man who demanded money is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, wearing an orange and yellow hoodie sweatshirt with gold lettering, black shorts with white trim and white tennis shoes.

The second man is described as 5 feet 10 inches with a camouflage hoodie jacket, jeans and white tennis shoes.

Neither of the men were wearing masks or gloves and yesterday, the sheriff's office fingerprinted areas of the bank, Scott said.

At the scene of the robbery, Capt. Greg Benton also said they would be fingerprinting a paper one of the men touched, but that no note demanding money had been recovered.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to contact detective S. Jones at 540/507-7133.
