Germanna looking for classroom space in North Stafford

But before it can expand into North Stafford, the college needs $1.2 million, the projected cost beyond what the college expects to make in student revenues.

The college is looking at a five-year lease at the Town Center while it seeks space nearby to build a campus.

"We really want to be here," President David A. Sam said at a recent Stafford County Economic Development Authority meeting.

Since his appointment in March 2007, Sam has focused on establishing a presence in Stafford. In the fall, Germanna will offer nine classes at the University of Mary Washington's graduate campus on U.S. 17 in southern Stafford.

Germanna received two bids for rental space in Stafford and selected the Aquia location because of the population density in that area. The Town Center off U.S. 1 is now being converted into a mixed-use development with offices, residential units, restaurants and retail stores.

In the 2006-07 school year, more than 2,000 of Germanna's students came from Stafford.

"We've been hearing that students were not coming to our Fredericksburg-area campus in Spotsylvania County because of traffic on [Interstate] 95 and Route 1," Vice President for Administrative Services Rick Brehm said.

Early proposals say the center in Stafford could offer technology and homeland-defense classes to cater to the heavy concentration of military and defense contractors there. Options are still being considered, but Germanna is looking at five classrooms, with an average enrollment of 15 students per class.

Germanna is asking for financial support from the Stafford EDA, as well as private donors.

"It's just ideal if we could make it work," Stafford EDA member Jo Knight said.

Staff reporter Bill Freehling contributed to this story.
