Margaret M. Hofmann

Margaret Meader Hofmann, 82, died at her home in Fredericksburg Thursday, May 15, 2008.

Born in Camden, N.J., she moved to Fredericksburg in 1963 to begin her career as professor of French language and literature at Mary Washington College, now the University of Mary Washington. She was awarded the title of professor emerita when she retired in 1992.

An undergraduate of Wellesley College, she earned her M.A. at the University of New Hampshire and her Ph.D. at the University of Kansas. While at MWC, she served as chair of the Department of Modern Foreign Languages, as well as on numerous faculty committees.

An active member in the community, she served for many years as treasurer for the Friends of the Central Rappahannock Regional Library and for Fredericksburg Sister City. She also served as program chairman for MWC's Elder Study and was a volunteer for HFFI.

She is survived by her son, Stephen Hofmann of Virginia Beach; a brother, John Meader of Moorestown, N.J.; a niece, Julie Seder; and a nephew, Jim McClelland.

Interment will be in Meaderboro, N.H.
