Wilbur C. Shepherd

Retired U.S. Army Col. Wilbur Christian Shepherd, 78, of Kilmarnock died Sunday, May 18, 2008.

He was born in Fredericksburg and was the son of the late Charles F. and Mabel Seay Shepherd.

Col. Shepherd served 26 years of active service in the U.S. Army, during which he attended the U.S. Army War College, served two tours in Vietnam, served with NATO in France and had numerous other duty stations. He also was the commander of an Airborne Unit at Fort Bragg, N.C.

Among his many decorations, he received the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. He also earned the Army Parachute Badge.

Following his military career, he was a successful corporate executive in the Washington, D.C., area. Col. Shepherd was an active member of the Lancaster Union Lodge 88 A.F. & A.M.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Patricia Stone Shepherd; five children, Wilbur F. Shepherd and his wife, Lynda, and Jerri L. Shepherd, all of Centreville, Karen S. Miller and her husband, Mark, of Charlotte, N.C., David A. Shepherd of Woodbridge and Amy Hutcherson and her husband, Courtney, of Greeneville, Tenn.; eight grandchildren, Phillip, Stephen, Rachel and Mark Shepherd, Sarah Miller, and Matthew, Kaitlyn and Zachary Hutcherson; three great-grandchildren, William, Joshua and Matthew Shepherd.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. at Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, in Oak Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg, with full military honors.
