Retired Lt. Col. Harold Kenneth "Ken" Baer died Saturday, June 14, 2008.
Col. Baer was born June 13, 1922, in Toledo, Ohio, to Harold E. and Anne E. Buehler Baer.
Surviving are his three sons, James Baer and his wife, Melissa, of Severna Park, Md., Charles Baer and his wife, Tina, of Augusta, Ga., and John Baer and his wife, Kathy, of Locust Grove. Also surviving are four grandsons; one granddaughter; one stepgranddaughter; one sister, Margaret L. Brown of Oxford, Fla.; one niece; and four nephews.
Col. Baer was a graduate of DeVilbis High School of Toledo, Ohio. He attended the University of Toledo, Rensselaer Polytech Institute, American University and the University of Georgia in pursuit of higher degrees of education.
Col. Baer worked as an engineer for the Willys Overland Motor Co. of Toledo prior to being drafted into the armed services in December, 1942. He entered as a private and was discharged as a lieutenant colonel in June, 1968.
He was a a member of Mason Lodge 558 in Andover, N.Y., for many years.
While in service to his country, he served in Italy during World War II and in Korea and Okinawa during the Korean War.
After the completion of these duties, he headed a team of instructors in Germany as part of a Military Assistance Advisory Group in the Lend Lease Program for four years.
After his military career, he spent eight years in civil service at the Pentagon, where he served as a senior logistician for the Department of Defense. He retired from civil service in 1986.
Upon moving to Lake of the Woods, Locust Grove, in 1987, he became a building inspector for Orange County. He also joined the Lions International Club, from which he received many of their highest and most prestigious awards. He was an active member of The Lake of the Woods Church.
A viewing will be held at The Lake of the Woods Church on Thursday, June 19, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., with a memorial service immediately following. A reception for family and friends will follow the service in the fellowship hall. Interment will be in Culpeper National Cemetery on Friday, June 20, at 10 a.m.
