Guth goes distance third straight year

Stafford County resident Nancy Guth recently won her third straight women's title in the National 24-Hour Bike Challenge in Middleville, Mich.

Despite strong thunderstorms, Guth covered 348.5 miles, more than any other woman in the field of 333 cyclists. She also teamed with her daughter, Marta Sullivan, for top honors in the mother-daughter division (558.4 miles).

Chris Ragsdale of Seattle won the men's division, also for the third straight year, at 473.2 miles.

AREA GOLFERS EYE STATE AMATEUR TITLE

Six golfers with local ties are entered in the Virginia State Golf Association's Amateur Championship, which begins Tuesday at the Kingsmill River Course in Williamsburg.

Chad Mozingo of Culpeper is one of 15 juniors in the 120-player field. Other players with local ties include Josh Speight (Culpeper), Brian Stele (Spotsylvania), Steve Davenport (Hartwood), Judson Foster (Gordonsville) and Jimmy Delp, a Stafford High School graduate who now lives in Arlington.

After two rounds of stroke play Tuesday and Wednesday, the field will be pared to 32 for match play, beginning Thursday. The 36-hole final is scheduled for Saturday.

Vienna's Pat Tallent is the defending champion.

NFL CAMP HELD AT MOUNTAIN VIEW

Former Denver Broncos standout and current Potomac High School coach Tony Lilly was among the instructors at the recent free NFL Junior Player Development Camp held at Mountain View High School.

Over 150 players age 11-14 learned from high school and college coaches as well as former area high school standouts such as Randy Hippeard (now at Virginia-Wise); Patrick Slebonic and Anthony Mihota (Virginia); Torrey Smith (Maryland); Jake Johnson (Virginia Tech); Donovan Miles (West Virginia) and Jarvis Williams (Kent State).
