'Drill More' Gilmore has wrong energy plan

While I would love it if gas prices dropped in the near future, Jim Gilmore's plans, while tempting, would not achieve this ["Warner outlines energy proposals," June 19].

Mr. Gilmore favors drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and along our coastline.

It would take approximately 10 years for drilling in either of these areas to affect our gas prices even the slightest bit. Additionally, drilling in these areas could cause irreparable damage to the environment in and around drilling sites.

I am not willing to sacrifice a wildlife reserve, created to preserve the environment, to fuel our oil habit that plays a hand in destroying it.

Beyond risking environmental damage that would result in little change in gas prices to show for our efforts, Mr. Gilmore does not seem to have any other answer. His solution is no solution at all.

While Mr. Gilmore has proposed outdated, unrealistic answers to our problems with gas prices, Mark Warner supports viable, environmentally friendly solutions.

By supporting greater tax credits on hybrid vehicles, Mr. Warner works to make fuel-efficient vehicles more realistic for the average buyer.

Additionally, Mr. Warner supports an increase in research and development of various cleaner and renewable energy sources, which, in the long term, could enable us to wean ourselves off oil altogether.

The people that are profiting from ethanol (posted by freedomfirst , June 27, 2008 11:18 pm)
need to be waterboarded and then sent to Guantanamo. It takes more energy to make a gallon of ethanol from corn than ethanol delivers. How is that possible? Huge subsidies from the federal government and huge excise tax on imported ethanol.... I wonder how much a gallon of ethanol sells for? I only see 10% in gasoline. This is really stupid, use more energy to make a fuel than the fuel delivers. Perhaps someone can clarify this for us.....

Gap (continued) (posted by C_Asaban , June 27, 2008 4:13 pm)
Where do you fill up with hydrogen? Granted, we need to get off oil as our reserves will eventually run dry. However, there is a gap in time between now and when hydrogen and other energy sources become viable alternatives. This gap cannot be filled by importing energy and putting power and money in the hands of those who wish us harm. We must use domestic energy sources to feed our demand for energy until we are able to wean ourselves off of gasoline.

While it will take time for either drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve or offshore drilling to have a significant impact on gasoline prices, it will also take time for this nation to come to terms with hybrid and alternative energy vehicles and sources. On top of that, it will even more time to develop the infrastructure necessary to maintain vehicles that operate on alternative energies. For example, in June, Honda released the first zero emission, hydrogen powered car.

What backbone?? (posted by freedomfirst , June 27, 2008 12:17 pm)
If we have one I'd like to see it...

Drill (posted by lifetimelocal , June 27, 2008 10:42 am)
While we are hugging trees. The chinese and others are setting off the coast of Cuba ready to drill into a reserve that is partially under Florida. We need to start providing for ourselves. Many of you are trying to protect things that won't be there if these guys get to them first. What happend to the backbone of this country?
