BY TAFT COGHILL JR. Reggie Williams cant hold his head down too long. The Bowling Green native and former Virginia Mili-tary Institute basketball star wasn't selected in the NBA Draft on Thursday, but he's received eight invitations to play for Summer League teams. "Its not over yet," he said. Williams watched the draft with his family in Prince George County. He said his hopes were raised when the Charlotte Bobcats, Sacramento Kings and Dallas Mavericks picked in the second round because he had strong workouts with those teams, but all bypassed the two-time Division I scoring leader. "The draft was a little awkward," Williams said. "Some people went that people didn't think would go. I was a little disappointed, but I kept an open mind that it was a possibility I could go or not go. I was bummed by some of the people I saw [drafted]." Williams has received Summer League offers from Charlotte, Sacramento, Dallas, the Atlanta Hawks, Orlando Magic, New Jersey Nets, Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Clippers, his agent Jerry Dianis said yesterday. The 6-foot-4 shooting guard said he's looking for a team with significant roster availability and not many players at his position. The Mavericks may best fit that description. "I've got to do a little research like I'm back in college," Williams said. "I've got to get on the Internet, look up the teams that are interested and see what they've got at my position, what they drafted and what they brought in." Dianis said a choice must be made soon. He said some teams want their Summer League prospects in as early as Tuesday. The Summer League action begins on July 7 in Orlando, Fla. There are also camps in Las Vegas and Salt Lake City, Utah. Dianis said choosing a team to tryout for is often more attractive than being drafted from the 40th to the 60th pick in the second-round, which is where Williams was projected to go. Second-round picks don't receive guaranteed contracts. "We've got to put Reggie in the best situation for him to make a roster," Dianis said. "I feel confident we will do that." Williams will remain a free agent even after he joins a Summer League team. The games will feature a host of draft picks and undrafted players, but also a handful of current NBA players on each team. Williams said he's looking forward to returning to full-court action instead of the individual drills he did on his tour working out for 11 different franchises. He said hopefully he'll make enough of an impression to be invited to a NBA camp in the fall. "I'm excited to get back to doing what I do best on the court as far as my strengths in the five-on-five scene," Williams said. "I'm looking forward to doing well in that, moving on to veterans camp and trying to make one of those rosters."
