Last time I checked, English is our language
This is in response to Judith Moshenek's June 26 letter about lifeguards needed at the river.
I would like to point out that most of the people who've drowned in the Rappahannock River were Spanish-speakers.
If we were to pay for lifeguards or for Coast Guard Auxiliary to man the river, they would probably have to speak Spanish.
The last time I checked, Fredericksburg and Stafford County were in the United States of America, and we speak English here.
There is absolutely no reason why anyone in the U.S. should have to speak any other language to communicate with someone else living in this country.
I think anybody who goes into that river without a boat is a fool. We don't need lifeguards. We need for fools to stay out of the river.

Why should residents have to suffer for other peoples' actions? I am sick and tired of the "punish the group" mentality". Seems to me that the masses get punished for not babysitting others. There are more laws on the books today due to stupid people not taking responsibility for their own actions. I say maybe we should just let natural selection take over.
I can see it now

a 40 foot tall fence along the river on the stafford side. No Swimming! How do you ban and enforce it. It costs more to enforce than to man it. The signs are enough. WATCH OUT........that is enough. Why dont we just ban everything in the world that has the potential to kill you. IF we did, we would all walk around in our houses wrapped in bubble wrap. There would be no sports, cars, flying, food, smoking, getting married (hahahaha), sex, and so on and so on, PEOPLE, watch out for YOURSELF>
