William C. Lontz

William Clifford Lontz Jr. went to be with his Lord on Saturday, July 5, 2008.

William was known as "Mr. Bill" to his chemistry students at North Stafford High School and James Monroe High School, where he taught for many years. He also instructed hundreds of swimmers for Fredericksburg Swim School.

Mr. Bill was born in Nebraska in 1945 and moved to Fargo, N.D., where he spent most of his childhood. He graduated from Grinnell College and the University of Washington before being drafted into the Army. He married his wife, Betty, in 1969, and they were stationed in Germany for more than two years. They later settled in Fredericksburg in 1972.

Bill leaves behind his wife, Betty, of 39 years; his two sons, Joshua and his wife, Alison, of Atlanta, Ga., and Travis and his wife, Tara, along with their children, Emily and Nathan, of Bowling Green; a sister, Susan and her husband, Sheldon, of Canada; a brother-in-law, James and his wife, Nelda, of Norfolk; and several nieces and nephews.

Bill will be missed and wishes to be remembered with a scholarship for science students in the city and surrounding high schools.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region, c/o The Bill Lontz Scholarship, Box 208, Fredericksburg, Va. 22408-0208.
