Monroe Singers: A rich musical tradition

I'd like to congratulate the Monroe Singers on continuing to uphold the long-lasting and rich tradition of excellence in choral music and performance that has been a staple of the Fredericksburg community for more than 30 years ["Homegrown harmony wins praise in Tennessee," May 27].

As a former Monroe Singer, I take pride in knowing that the standard set by Mandy Carr more than 30 years ago is still honored and valued.

My personal experience as a Monroe Singer from 1996-1999 under the direction of Carr lead me to continue a lifelong study of music.

Whether singing Bach, Dowland, or the Beach Boys, Ms. Carr constantly instilled in her students the importance of technique, professionalism, connection with the audience, and positive life skills.

Our wide variety of music appealed to the young and the old, the classically trained and the lover of rock 'n' roll.

It bridged generations and crossed geographical boundaries and, in doing so, brought people together as only music and the dedication of a skilled teacher can do.

I thank the Monroe Singers for recognizing what they have and for carrying on the legacy that has been passed into their hands. My only hope is that they continue to respect and value their place among us.
