The Stafford County Sheriff's Office recently graduated the eighth session of its Citizens Police Academy.
The program, which started in 2001, is funded by donations and a grant from the state Department of Criminal Justice. It is designed to enhance residents' understanding of the functions and services of the Sheriff's Office. For 11 weeks, participants get an inside look at the daily operations and the "hows and whys" of police work. Graduates of the academy act as advocates to promote community policing.
The most recent graduates are Ruth Angle, Nikki Caines, Ingrid Franco, Belinda Garcia, Jacqueline Hooker, Owen Johnson, Barbara Mayhew, Karen Maziarski, Carlos Melendez, Ed Mooney, Robert Otterstatter, Glen Schelin, Mary Schelin, Heather Stefl and George Zotos.
