We can go to war, but we can't help our seniors

Date published: 7/28/2008

Mr. Bush and our leaders can spend hundreds of billions on an unwanted war when there will never be any peace in that part of the world.

They can spend billions every year feeding and giving medical help to other countries. These countries cannot feed their children, but people keep having them by the dozens.

But our federal government cannot find the billions to support seniors on Medicare who need medications, especially those who have no other insurance.

Our medical supplier has notified us that we will no longer receive the medication we need to help us breathe.

My wife has severe lung problems. Every four hours, she has to take a mixture of ipratropium and albuterol sulfate in a small capsule. That is about a teaspoon.

Now we are supposed to mix it ourselves, since Mr. Bush and Medicare have decided we can do that.

I think that it is going to be a great problem.

Also on the agenda for Mr. Bush and Medicare is the stopping of payment for oxygen machines needed for seniors, such as my wife, who depend on them.

If they stop paying for this machine, they are signing the death warrant for a lot of very sick people.

What Medicare was designed for (posted by savedbygracealone , July 28, 2008 8:45 pm)
Medicare was designed to SUPLIMENT medical costs, not completely cover them. That's not the real problem with it though. The bigger issue is that there are people getting Medicare and Medicaid that are NOT US citizens and should NOT be entitled to it. Take them out of the picture, and they both might work. The problem is that people like Obama want to allow ILLEGALS to have our tax dollars. It IS my government, and they have NO RIGHT to give my money to ILLEGALS when people like the author need it more!

A little help please? (posted by savedbygracealone , July 28, 2008 8:41 pm)
I completely understand now. If I just send my entire paycheck to the government, they'll go ahead and re-distribute it as they see fit. Could someone please point me to the part of the Constitution that guarantees health care? I found the part where we can go to war to defend our national interests. For those trying to compare the two, you should read the Constitution. We will fail as a nation if we keep this up. No government funded social program has ever worked better by throwing more money at it.

My point is the expectation of the American people that the government will take care of them (posted by Mandrake , July 28, 2008 5:28 pm)
because the politicians want it that way. That does not mean when bad things happen that the government provides no safety net. USA government did not start out that way and it changed when politicians figured out that by doing "favors" to their constituents they would get their vote. (Mayor Daily?) President Reagan had the right idea to provide that safety net, but also reduce taxes so that Americans can keep more of their money to pay for their own welfare.

This is a major problem (posted by corgi , July 28, 2008 4:20 pm)
My parents are on medicare. Medicare will only pay so much money a year for prescription meds. My mom and dad meet that limit by mid-summer. They now have to pay for everything out of pocket. Their meds run about $900 a month. Social Security only goes so far. My Dad is 75 and has to work part time in order to pay for meds. SO Mandrake...are you saying that people should have to work their entire lives? Staying out of trouble when you are young does not guarantee good health in old age.

My apology to all of you who were offended by my suggestion (posted by Mandrake , July 28, 2008 3:46 pm)
that Americans should take care of themselves by doing all the right things after Mommy, teary eyed, drops them off at Kindergarten for the first time. Self reliance is an American virtue, but politicians have robbed us of that virtue because they have perverted what America was and should be. It is a given that we shouldn't throw money at foreign governments to buy their support, and it's a given we shouldn't unnecessarily go to war. Health care would be cheap without government involvement...think!
