Stafford firm gets $94M contract
BAE Systems wins Marine Corps contractDate published: 7/31/2008 BY BILL FREEHLING BAE Systems, a large defense contractor and major employer in Stafford County, has won a $94 million contract to provide support to the U.S. Marine Corps. The global defense firm, which has an office in the Stafford Commerce Center, won the five-year Marine Corps Operational Test and Evaluation Activity Omnibus Support contract. The majority of the work will be done in the Quantico area, but testing will occur around the world, according to the company's news release. About 3,000 new jobs are heading to Quantico Marine Corps Base as part of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission decisions. BAE will be responsible for testing and evaluating non-aviation equipment and systems for the Marine Corps, the news release says. BAE planned a reception last night at the National Museum of the Marine Corps to celebrate the contract. Invited guests included local developers and economic development officials. The company opened its Stafford office in 2001 after being awarded a five-year, $34 million contract to do engineering and support work for the Marine Corps Systems Command's Ground Weapons Directorate. The company has recently been identified as one of Stafford's larger employers, providing roughly 250 jobs. Most are the type of high-tech government contracting positions that the county is trying to attract. BAE Systems has not publicly announced specifics about whether the new contract will create additional jobs in Stafford, or whether the firm will need to lease more office space.
