Come to the fair!

The Fredericksburg Fair: History and fun all wrapped up in one

Date published: 8/1/2008

IN 1738, John Wesley founded the Methodist movement, the cuckoo clock was invented, both the future King George III of England and his future general, Charles Cornwallis, were born--and the first Fredericksburg Agricultural Fair was held.

This year's fair, with its upgraded grounds and new pricing, continues through Aug. 3. Consider it an opportunity to experience history and corn dogs all in the same night.

Opening night at the fair saw about a 17 percent increase in attendance over last year, officials said. An expanded petting zoo, a beer garden, motor sports, a Ferris wheel, and lots of food vendors and games are giving fairgoers their money's worth.

The fair is one of the local events that brings the community together. This year, general admission is $7, less than in previous years when the larger admission price included rides. Rides now come à la carte.

Why go to the Fredericksburg Fair? Because it's a community event, good for the kids, fun for adults--and it's not on video. It's real live frolic at a reasonable price. Picture ol' George III with cotton candy in his hand--now that's the fair.
