The source of economic woes? Republicans

Date published: 8/6/2008

The recent letter from David Green amazed me ["To destroy our way of life, vote Democratic," July 28].

Mr. Green blamed Democrats for inflated government spending and job losses.

Apparently, he has not read the newspaper that has printed his letters frequently over the past eight years. If he had done so, he would have been aware that the Republican president, George Bush, has led our country into what is starting to look like the worst economic mess since the Great Depression.

With the collusion of Congress, which has also been dominated by Republicans for the majority of his presidency, George Bush cut taxes for his super-rich friends while federal spending went unchecked.

True, social programs were cut, but pork-barrel earmarks to the districts and friends of the Republicans with the most power and seniority have more that taken up the slack.

The deficit that was thus created has left our country with a debt that is crippling our economy, creating inflation, business failures, and job losses that can all be laid at the door of the Republicans.

When Republican Jim Gilmore created just such an economic mess in Virginia, it was Democrat Mark Warner who had the vision and skills to repair the damage.

As governor, Mark Warner ably put Virginia on the road to recovery, and because of his leadership and that of our current governor, Democrat Tim Kaine, Virginia is now considered the best state in the union in which to do business.

It is clear that we need the leadership of Mark Warner and other Democrats like him in the federal government now.

In November, I will be voting to send Mark Warner to the Senate and Barack Obama to the White House.

I urge others who want to see our economy prosper again to do the same.

On another note, Carter's administration was 30 years ago. It is over. Regan's administration is over. If you want to cite bad economic times, why don't you talk about Hoover or someone from that era. They are water under the bridge, as is Bill Clinton. They are over. Concentrate on the crap we got going on now and those of you who voted for the knuckleheads we have now better start doing your homework and stop give advice. You failed with your choices, but you still spew. The USA is a great place.

Obama needs to keep running from his muslim ancestry. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/06/AR2008080601081.html?hpid=topnews

The only way this letter makes any sense is if you substitute "The Carter Administration" for the words "The Great Depression". 20% + prime rate, higher unemployment, higher gas prices (when adjusted for inflation), and it took almost the ENTIRE Reagan Presidency to fix what carter did in 4 short years. Pass the Kool-Aid!

Your talking Monkey President never vetoed one spending package from his Republican held congress. First President to ever to do. He has spent more money than all the other presidents combined. Our dollar is nothing, he is an idiot, we are indebted to everyone. We pay a billion dollars a day on interest on debt he has accrued. He is an idiot and if you follow him or the Republican's fiscal policies you are an idiot too. Stop lying. Six years of his term was Bill Clinton's fault, the last two congress

As if no Democrat ever attached an earmark to a bill...These same Dems who promised to do away with earmarks and then voted twice against giving the President power to strip earmarks from bills and return them to Congress for a vote since they regained power..Oh yeah the same Dems who in 2006 also had a plan to stop the rise in gasoline prices which have doubled since they announced their plan that no one has ever seen.
