Former superintendent named interim chief of Beach schools

Robert G. Luttrell has been named acting superintendent of Colonial Beach schools, School Board Chairman Tim Trivett announced yesterday.

Luttrell, 61, retired in January after five years as school superintendent in Richmond County.

"I'm hopeful I can help the Colonial Beach schools make sure they're ready to open and get them over the hump until they find a new superintendent," Luttrell said.

Luttrell, who will start work Monday, replaces Alice H. Howard, who retired Aug. 1 after seven years as superintendent.

Trivett said Luttrell will serve at least 90 days as acting superintendent and perhaps longer, depending on the time it takes the School Board to find a permanent superintendent.

Luttrell served 14 years as assistant superintendent of Richmond County before becoming superintendent. He is also a former principal of Northumberland and Middlesex High schools.

He lives in Urbanna.
