Joseph Shewchuk

Joseph Shewchuk, 81, of Locust Grove died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, at Mary Washington Hospital.

Born in Brautford, Ontario, Canada, Mr. Shewchuk was a 52-year resident of South Florida and spent the last six years in Lake of the Woods.

As a first generation American, he successfully pursued the American dream. He served honorably in the Army National Guard of Florida. He was a firefighter and paramedic for the Coral Gables Fire Department in Florida. He was a lifelong member of the IAFF-AFLCIO, Sheraton Baptist Church in Hollywood, Fla., and First Baptist Church in Ocala, Fla. He also was a member of Stevensburg Baptist Church in Stevensburg, a member of The Lake of the Woods Church and a facilitator for Lake of the Woods Alzheimer's Support Group.

Mr. Shewchuk was a recreational private pilot and enjoyed flying with his son. He enjoyed being outdoors and loved hunting, fishing and camping. He had been a professional hockey player with the American Hockey League and played semi-professional baseball.

Survivors include his son, Curtis Shewchuk; his daughter, Kathy Heyl; his grandson, Ryan; his granddaughters, Ehren and Jennifer; his sister, Kay Pencak; his daughter-in-law, Susan Floyd Shewchuk; and loving members of the Shewchuk, Phillips and Floyd families. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Agnes; his wife, Nancy Phillips Shewchuk; his sisters, Mary and Anne; and his brothers, Jack and Bobby.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at Stevensburg Baptist Church, 19393 York Road., Stevensburg, with the Rev. Philip Walker officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 2217 Princess Anne St. Suite 106-1F, Fredericksburg, Va. 22401; or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105.
