Local company trucking for breast cancer awareness

Anderson Propane Service of Fredericksburg has a truck painted pink in support of Breast Cancer research

If you pass a pink propane truck traveling in the Fredericksburg area, you aren't hallucinating.

Anderson Propane Service just last week bought a new truck to add to its fleet.

"We decided to paint it pink to emphasize the awareness of breast cancer," said company president Mark Anderson. He said they had heard of other companies having pink trucks.

Tri Gas & Oil in Federalsburg, Md., has its own "Pink Lady," and proceeds from it are being donated to the Maryland affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.

Tri Gas & Oil has been operated for three generations by the McMahan family, whose matriarch, the late Audrey McMahan, was a breast cancer survivor. She and her husband, Lee, founded the company in 1963.

"We thought it was such a great idea [to have a pink truck] that we wanted to be a part of it," said Anderson, who has been president of the Fredericksburg companies since 1996 and lives in Spotsylvania County.

The company does not have a nickname for its pink truck yet, but Anderson said he is open to suggestions.

While not personally affected by breast cancer in his family, Anderson said a woman employed with the company is a breast cancer survivor, and several employees have family members who have battled it.

A portion of proceeds from the pink truck will be donated to the American Breast Cancer Foundation.

The light pink truck with dark pink lettering will be used for regular delivery services. Anderson said the company has already received a lot of positive comments from customers and community members.

"It's making people aware of [breast cancer]," he said.

The pink truck will appear Oct. 11 at the Chili & Rib Festival at the Fredericksburg Fairgrounds.

Anderson Propane Service and Anderson Oil Co., located on Tidewater Trail in Spotsylvania, serve residents and businesses in Fredericksburg and surrounding counties, including King George and Caroline counties.

The oil company was founded in 1976 and the propane service began in 1996. Anderson also sells fireplaces and stoves.
