Suspects busy when getaway car towed

Car towed while occupants are out breaking into other cars, police say

Date published: 10/8/2008

BY KEITH EPPS

While three suspects were stealing from cars early Monday in Stafford County, police said, their own vehicle was being towed.

Stafford deputies eventually arrested the stranded suspects and charged them with a slew of theft-related offenses.

Sheriff's spokesman Bill Kennedy said the investigation began about 3:45 a.m. when a citizen flagged down Deputy Frank Shannon in the England Run area.

The resident told police that he'd just seen two young men inside his vehicle on Colleen Road.

When he went out to confront them, they ran off. The man got into his vehicle and was looking for the suspects when he came upon the deputy.

The suspects weren't immediately found. Kennedy said the victim had damage to his radio and a few dollars missing.

The suspects had also gotten into his wife's car, taking some credit cards. At least one of the cards was later used, Kennedy said.

While Shannon was investigating those incidents, he got a report from another resident on nearby Excalibur Circle.

That resident reported that someone had gone through his vehicle, taking three dollar bills and some change.

A few hours later, Kennedy said, the first victim spotted the suspects in front of the 7-Eleven near Olde Forge subdivision and called police.

First Sgt. Ray Davis, who was in that area, saw the suspects and stopped them as they began walking away.

A 17-year-old boy told Davis that their car had been towed and they were making calls in an effort to get it back. The car had been illegally parked in England Run, Kennedy said.

A car stereo, GPS units, other electronics and guns were found among the bags the suspects were carrying, Kennedy said.

Deputies Shannon and Chris Armitage showed up to assist Davis. After two of the suspects were handcuffed, the third took off running.

Shannon caught that suspect and police later recovered a gun that he tossed during the chase.

That gun and a second handgun found at the scene had been stolen last week during a daytime burglary in Fredericksburg, police said.

City police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said the guns were taken from a home in the 200 block of Twin Lakes Drive Thursday while the residents were at work.

Joshua Mason, 20, of Stafford and Levon Spence, 22, of Spotsyvlania were charged with multiple offenses, including grand larceny and credit card fraud. Mason was also charged with carrying a concealed weapon as a felon.

They were placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond. Kennedy said more charges are pending.

The 17-year-old Fredericksburg boy was placed in the Rappahannock Juvenile Detention Center. He is also facing multiple charges.

Who would have thought... (posted by Trippletap , Oct. 8, 2008 1:10 pm)
that a felon would be posession of a firearm, despite the fact that there are laws that prohibit them from this very thing? How many think that if it were illegal for everyone to posess a firearm, this same type of individual would then start obeying the law?
