A sign of the times in Culpeper?

Is Rixeyville incident a sign of the times?

Culpeper County Sheriff's Sgt. Vern Fox called it "political hijinks."

Authorities were summoned to a residence on State Route 229 near Rixeyville yesterday on a report that a political sign had been damaged overnight. The deputy who responded found that a McCain-Palin sign near a business had been turned backwards and a handmade Barack Obama sign had been taped to it, Fox said.

A subsequent investigation determined that the McCain sign had not been damaged, so it was not a case of vandalism, Fox said. And, because of the location of the sign, Fox said the incident did not even constitute trespassing.

The Obama sign was removed, the McCain sign was turned around and Rixeyville, which has traditionally voted Republican for the past 50 years, returned to normal.

Fox said this was his office's only such political incident this year.
