IRS hires 1,000 veterans, hits goal

Federal government promotes drug-free workplaces

Date published: 10/12/2008

THE Office of Person- nel Management has designated Oct. 20-26 as Drug-Free Work Week.

During this week, the OPM encourages federal agencies to develop programs to increase employees' awareness of the resources available to them and inform them of their rights and responsibilities in maintaining a healthy and productive life.

Among the programs available to federal employees and their families are the Employee Assistance Program, comprehensive health insurance and generous leave policies.

If you or someone you know needs assistance in maintaining a drug-free lifestyle and your agency doesn't promote this program, you can find out about other resources on the OPM's Web site.

JOBS FOR VETERANS

Another very visible program within the federal work force is veterans employment.

The IRS recently announced that it had met its goal of hiring a minimum of 1,000 veterans during the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30.

This goal was accomplished by working with groups such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Blinded Veterans Association and Paralyzed Veterans of America. The IRS also received assistance from other federal agencies, such as the Pentagon and the Veterans Affairs Department.

I get a lot of questions from veterans about preference for federal jobs. Many who haven't been selected feel that some agencies are not following the veterans preference rules.

Veterans preference applies only to jobs advertised under the competitive hiring process. If you are competing for a federal job under the merit promotion process, veterans preference does not apply.

Federal job announcements will state which process is being used. Make sure you fully understand the differences. If you have questions, you can always call the staffing specialist listed on each announcement.

GSA NAMES NEW LEADER

The General Services Administration recently announced that James A. Williams assumed the position of acting administrator. He replaces David Bibb, who retired from the federal service.

The GSA serves as the federal government's landlord, with responsibility for leasing and maintaining federal office space. It is also responsible for overseeing and assisting with much of the procurement that goes on in the federal government. It works with agencies and vendors to ensure taxpayers get the most value for their procurement dollars.
