RICHMOND-- Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin promised she and John McCain would freeze non-essential government spending and balance the federal budget in their first term during a rally here yesterday.
The Alaska governor appeared without McCain before a crowd estimated by the Associated Press to be at least 20,000 people at the Richmond International Raceway.
She and McCain also held a similarly-sized rally earlier in the day in Virginia Beach.
Palin's speech focused primarily on economic issues; she did not mention rival Democrat Barack Obama's ties to former Weatherman William Ayers, a connection the McCain campaign has been pushing in recent days.
Instead, she said Americans are rightly angry at greedy Wall Street bankers, corrupt Washington, and arrogant Washington insiders who have helped create the current economic recession and financial banking crisis.
"John McCain is going to turn that anger into action," Palin said. "He will balance the federal budget by the end of our term."
She said she and McCain plan to freeze federal spending, limiting it to vital government functions--she cited worker retraining programs and care for military veterans as examples--and will provide tax relief for citizens and businesses as well.
Palin said Obama's tax plan--which Obama says will provide tax relief for 95 percent of Americans--and Obama's spending proposals are both unwise.
"We're going to get this economy back on the right track," she said. "Taxes are already too high, and [Obama] wants to raise them Barack Obama would make us even deeper in debt."
Palin also spoke about energy policy, discussing clean coal at some length since Virginia is a coal-producing state. She said investment in coal and nuclear energy will create new jobs.
She also promised to be an advocate for families with special-needs children. Palin's infant son, Trig, born earlier this year, has Down Syndrome, and she said she will "make sure in the White House that these families have a friend, have an advocate."
Stafford County Republican chairwoman Susan Stimpson attended the rally, and said she was glad to hear Palin outline the Republican plan to stimulate the economy.

He picked a babbling idiot as his running mate. Said babbling idiot now receives more attention than he does.
Curious question: Did someone hand you a copy of the court petition you mentioned? Do you have a source if not? I'm curious as to how you came about this information. I'm not suggesting it isn't true, just wondering why looking up that trivial portion of a man's life was so important to you. wouldn't a man's associations with criminals, racists and self admitted terrorists be a little more important? Go ahead and mention the Keating 5. 4 were democrats, and McCain was exonerated...NON ISSUE....NEXT????
Why is it that every time a Republican does something a little questionable, liberals dive in like vultures to point and spew their vile rhetoric? Ever took a close look at the democrats? John Edwards, Bill Clinton, and Tim Mahoney (you know the "knight in shining armor" that saved us all from that evil Mark Foley) to name 3 off the top of my head. If Rezco, Wright, and Ayers don't matter, why is 9 months of "shacking up" (NOT ILLEGAL) such a big deal to you? Got a REAL issue with McCain???

I seriously doubt that most would consider adultery as part of the basic character of a man so I think there IS competition! According to court records, McCain did not sue his wife for divorce until Feb. 19, 1980, and he wrote in his court petition that he and his wife had “cohabited” until Jan. 7 of that year – or for the first nine months of his relationship with his current wife.
here we go again....

Libs just pouncing on every word instead of listening to the message and having an intellectual disagreement. In the end, I'm not convinced either ticket has any real answers... just temporary ideas to which they think unclaimed voters will respond. So I have to look at the basic character of each man and there is NO competition.
