F. Earl Baird

Francis Earl Baird of Colonial Beach died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2008, in Colonial Beach.

Born July 8, 1920, to John N. and Elizabeth E. Baird, he is survived by one son, Robert W. Baird and his wife, Shirley, of Stafford County; one stepson, Timothy E. Curtin and his wife, Jamie, of Colonial Beach; one granddaughter; and four stepgrandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wives, Laurel "Pat" Baird and Ethel H. Baird; a son, John S. Baird of Arizona; a sister, Marcelyn B. Nestor of Arlington; and a half brother, Bruce Baird of Washington, D.C.

Mr. Baird had retired as a senior engineering technician from Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division, with 42 years of service, and later was a funeral director with Nash & Slaw Funeral Homes for 15 years.

A native of King George County, he moved to Colonial Beach in 1972.

A former senior warden and trustee at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, he was a current member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church at Oak Grove.

He had been a member of the American Legion since 1945, having served as commander of Post 148, 8th District commander and vice commander of the Department of Virginia. He was a life member and past captain of the Colonial Beach Rescue Squad, and served on the board of the Rappahannock Emergency Medical Services Council for nine years and the Colonial Beach Board of Zoning Appeals for 10 years. For a brief period, he served on the Planning Commission.

While living in King George, he had served as county representative for RADCO and as chairman of the County Highway Safety Commission. He was a member of the Planning Commission and county chairman of the American Red Cross.

A veteran of World War II, he served as a petty officer with the U.S. Naval Reserves in the Asiatic-Pacific theater.

The family will receive friends at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach, on Thursday, Oct. 16, from 6 to 8 p.m.

A funeral will be held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Oak Grove at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, with the Rev. Prentice Kinser officiating. Interment will be in Quantico National Cemetery at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22.
