Let's examine America's record on guns

Letter-writer Greg Harrod says we need to evaluate Barack Obama's record concerning gun-control ["Watch out if Dems gain total control" Oct. 15].
Perhaps we should.
Sen. Obama's record shows that he knows how to change things for the better in America.
Evaluate America's record. America has very loose laws dealing with gun control. In 2005, more than 10,000 people were killed with firearms in our country.
These are ugly numbers, but Mr. Harrod claims that Sen. Obama's attempts to limit firearms are uglier.
Examine Canada's record. Canada has very strict laws governing gun control. Approximately 200 people were killed with firearms in Canada in 2005.
The records speak for themselves; stricter policies equal less violence.
Contrary to Mr. Harrod's worries, anti-gun legislators don't want to revoke the Second Amendment; they just want to make our streets safer.
Americans should embrace any opportunity to prevent another horrible act like the Virginia Tech shooting. If we continue to enact loose gun-control laws, we will continue to experience tragedies like Columbine.
Mr. Harrod says we can run from our records, but we can't hide from them. We should stop running from America's record on gun violence and start fixing it.
However, you can't fix a problem if you don't know the cause. So don't listen to people who say guns aren't the issue. Listen to people like Sen. Obama who know what the causes are and how to find solutions for them.

So where was the enforcement of that regulation? All that regulation accomplished was preventing the law abiding students from defending themselves against one intent on causing harm, who wasn't worried about violating that rule. And people actually advocate making that the policy everywhere?

In 2006, 42,642 people were killed in traffic accidents in the US. Should we ban Autos? Firearms, just like cars are instruments used by people. People are expected to control them. Some people should be prevented from driving and some should be prevented from handeling firearms. Now, how hard is that to understand?
the 2nd amendment had nothing to do with

I think the laws in place now need to be inforced, not new ones made. As far as guns killing....It is people who do the killing, guns are just the tool used. If it wasn't guns it would be something else. Lay a gun on a table and as long as no one touches it it will not kill. But, let a criminal pick it up, and the PERSON will kill, using the gun as the tool of destruction.

Barack Obama arrives at the Pearly Gates and is greeted by Saint Peter: "May I go in?" asks Obama. "First I must ask you a few questions" answers the heavenly gatekeeper. "O.K." replies Obama, "I'm pretty good at Q & A." "Well," asks the saint, "What did you accomplish in your time on Earth to merit spending eternity in Paradise?" "I was elected the first Black president of the United States of America!" Obama proudly declares. "A Black president in America!" exclaims Saint Peter. "Hallelujah, when did this
